Trenchless Torpedo Method

Additional Information

  • Method: Torpedo drilling is a trenchless technique that involves using a specialized drilling machine (also known as a "torpedo") to bore a pathway underground for the new water line. The torpedo is guided by a predetermined path, typically using a combination of hydraulic power and pneumatic force.

  • Advantages:

  • Minimal Disruption: Torpedo drilling minimizes the need for extensive trench excavation, reducing disruption to landscaping, driveways, and other structures.
  • Speed: This method is often faster than traditional trench excavation, as it eliminates the need for digging and backfilling.
  • Access Constraints: Torpedo drilling is particularly useful in areas where traditional trenching might be difficult or impossible, such as under established structures or hard surfaces.

  • Considerations:

  • Accuracy: Precise planning and expertise are required to ensure the torpedo follows the desired path accurately.
  • Soil Conditions: The success of torpedo drilling can depend on the type of soil and ground conditions. Rocky or densely compacted soil may present challenges.
  • Cost: While torpedo drilling can save on excavation costs, specialized equipment and skilled operators can make it relatively more expensive compared to trench excavation.

  • PROCEDURE

  1. Assessment and Planning: A plumbing professional will assess your existing plumbing system to determine if pipe bursting is a suitable method for your specific situation. They'll also plan the installation route and access points.
  2. Access Points: Two access points are typically needed: one where the existing pipe starts and another where it ends. These access points will be used to insert the new 1 inch copper pipe and the bursting tool.
  3. Preparation: A bursting head or "torpedo" is a specialized tool that's larger than the existing pipe's diameter. It's attached to the new 1 inch copper pipe. The bursting head has cutting blades on the front to break apart the old pipe as it moves through it.
  4. Insertion and Bursting: The new pipe with the bursting head attached is inserted into the existing 1/2 inch pipe at the starting point. The hydraulic or pneumatic force is applied to the bursting head, which breaks apart the old pipe while simultaneously pulling the new pipe through the space created. As the old pipe is fractured, the surrounding soil is displaced, making way for the larger pipe.
  5. Completion and Connection: Once the bursting process is complete, the new 1 inch copper pipe is in place. It will follow the path of the old pipe. Connections are made at both ends of the new pipe to ensure proper water flow.

Benefits of Using Pipe Bursting for Upgrading Water Lines:

  1. Trenchless Installation: Pipe bursting is a trenchless method, meaning it requires minimal excavation. This reduces disruption to landscapes, driveways, and other structures.
  2. Faster Installation: Pipe bursting is often faster than traditional excavation methods since it eliminates the need for digging trenches.
  3. Less Disruption: The method is less disruptive to the property, making it a viable option for properties where preserving landscaping or hardscaping is important.
  4. Durable Upgrade: The new 1 inch copper pipe is seamlessly installed, ensuring a durable and efficient water supply upgrade.
  5. Cost-Effective: While the initial costs might be higher due to specialized equipment, the reduced labor and restoration expenses associated with excavation can make pipe bursting cost-effective in the long run.
  6. Versatility: Pipe bursting can be used for a variety of pipe materials, making it suitable for various plumbing systems.
